Thursday Threesome for July 26th

That time of the week again. Brought to us this week by backyard gardeners and The Back Porch.

Onesome: 'Lettuce'-- talk of salads and dressings: Is plain green your thing? ...or do you like 'stuff' mixed in or scattered over the top? ...and how about the dressing: what's leading your list this year?
I love stuff with my lettuce. Stuff like carrots and celery and cucumber and crutons and cheese and olives and dressing. Nope, I don't have a set preference when it comes to my salads, why do you ask? As far as dressing, I prefer ranch, but I occasionally have something else just for variety.

Twosome: and-- how about those Mets, -eh? Actually, baseball's doing okay this week, with basketball, football and cycling having the problems. Is there any sports news you'd care to comment on?
What's the latest sports news? :) Yep, still in the dark when it comes to the happenings in sports. Fortunately, I don't let that threaten my manhood.

Threesome: tomato-- and lettuce: the perfect toppings for that hamburger someone will cook up for you at a Labor Day picnic in another month or so? ...or perhaps you have another set of condiments you like on your meat or tofu?
Lettuce is fine, but the only tomato I like is Bob the Tomato. Which is funny because I like tomato sauce and ketchup. My perfect burger has lettuce, ketchup, cheese, and pickles.

That was Painful

My ultimate game Monday night was painful in more then one way. First, I was still soar from this weekend. Plus, I think I've come down with Clint's cold. It's mild, but I was suffering from a headache on Monday night, which didn't make running that much fun.

Then there was the game itself. We started out quite well. In fact, we were ahead 2-1 at one point.

It quickly went downhill from there.

At half we were behind 3-8. We scored once in the second half. Yep, that makes the final score 4-15.

We just couldn't connect. Throws were short of dropped. Usually, we can recover from that, but the other team didn't make those same costly mistakes.

On the bright side, it was a short game. Which means I got more Harry Potter read.

That's how I'm looking at CBS taking Pirate Master off the air and putting the rest on-line. I am a little bummed, however, because, while I enjoy the show, I haven't sat down and watched just one yet. I guess I'm going to have to do that with the rest of them since I can't be doing something else on my computer while watching something on my computer.

I am 470 pages into Harry Potter. Don't plan to do much else but read, so hopefully I'll get a couple hundred pages knocked out tonight.

Retreat!

This last weekend was our summer youth retreat. For something different this year, we didn't go to the beach. Okay, part of that was due to lack of early planning on our part. But it still seems to have gone off well.

Most everyone left Friday morning. They headed to Pyramid Lake, which is part way up the Grapevine on I-5, probably about 35 minutes from me. They spend the day tubbing and wake boarding before heading to a nearby campground for the night.

Clint and I were supposed to head up after work and join them, picking up pizza for dinner along the way. You'll noticed that I said said supposed to. The traffic was horrid! There was an accident and they had the 5 closed except for one lane just north of town. We never got on the five but took a parallel surface street. We were moving faster then the freeway, which isn't saying much. It took us two hours to get to the campground. Fortunately, someone ahead of us had stopped and gotten the pizza, so they weren't still waiting for the food.

Fortunately, that was the worst part of the weekend.

Saturday, we hit the lake, which meant that some people hit it again. Kurt had his parent's boat, and one family came up, so we had two boats. The water was really choppy, so the we just went tubbing that day. I hadn't been tubbing since I was in college, so it was fun to do it again. I think Kurt was driving faster then Mr. Patterson used to. Either that or I've gotten older. Must be that Kurt was going faster. I had some bad spills that hurt a little at first (including one where I landed face first in the water), but I had fun.

When we weren't out on the boats, we were hanging out at an isolated picnic area or playing in the water. Some of the guys found some clay/mud and completely covered themselves in the muck. We just hung out and talked. It was nice and relaxing.

But it was hot! I think it may have even been hotter then it is here. I thought it might be cold at night, but the first night I was too hot to sleep for a while. Everyone was hiding in the shade as much as possible. In fact, we all hit the pool after coming back from the lake.

A guest speaker came and talked about what loving God means from I John. I was doing okay with the first two message (Loving God mean obeying his commands and loving your brothers/sisters), but that third message hit me between the eyes. The theme was loving God means not loving the world. I was thinking I was fine with this one, too, until he started talking about pride of life. And God used it to convict me about my pride in position. No, I don't boast about what I have, probably because I don't have much. But I boast in my rank at Amazon and, to a much lesser extent, my position at Epinions. I'm not sure how I can balance writing reviews and not worrying about rank as much, but I need to find a way.

Anyway, we came back yesterday early afternoon. Fortunately, Kurt worked things out so I could get Harry Potter on the way back. (Yes, the youth pastor spoils me.) Between catching up on the internet, talking to my family, and watching Monk and Psych, I only got a little over 100 pages read. After lunch time, I'm not on page 200. But I do already know the big picture. I'm quite anxious to see how all the pieces fall into place.

Unfortunately, I won't get that far tonight. I've got an ultimate game again.

Thursday Threesome for July 19th

I'm at it again.

Brought to us this week by Me and The Back Porch.

Onesome: I love-- to hear about new music; do you have any new favorites for us this week?
I got Chris Rice's new CD this week. Not sure if I like it yet or not. Certainly better the second time through.

Twosome: this-- is way past the half way point of Summer; how are vacation and other plans working out for you? Here's hoping you're doing well!
I am so much busier then normal this summer. I am ready for Fall so things will slow down.

Threesome: Book-- query: Whatcha' readin' this week? No, not "The Harry"! Arrgh! ...okay, if that's a big thing, sure .
I'm actually between books. I finished the Thoene's latest, Sixth Covenant, yesterday. I've got a retreat this weekend. On the way home I intend to pick up Harry Potter and start it once I get home. But I'm not reading anything between now and then.

Two Games and Epiday

I know I haven't posted in a while, but I've been busy.

Last Thursday was an ultimate game. It was my only Thursday game this summer, which makes me really happy. I left youth group early to get to the game late. When I got there, we were tied 3-3. Then we were behind a few points before hitting half 8-7. We started out strong second half, increasing our lead to 12-8. Then we let them catch up. We traded points for the rest of the night. Games are supposed to be win by two hard cap at 18. We hit the hard cap first, so we won 18-17.

Meanwhile, this weekend was Epiday. This was a chance for members of Epinions to get together with local members. There were lots of meetings all over the country. Mine was at a park in Santa Monica. I got to meet several people I know well from the site, including one of the employees, and make several new friends as well. If you want full details, read my write up here.

Afterward, I went down to the beach for a quick dip, something I haven't done in two years. The water felt great. Well worth the extra time.

Monday night was an ultimate game yet again. We started this one out 0-4 but once we finally got our heads in the game, turned things around to take half 8-7. We came on strong in the second half, finishing 15-10. Both sides were playing lots of zone defense. And they were really poaching off us on defense, which meant I could get open as a swing or dump pretty easily. Gave me several more changes to get the disc then normal.

But I have to tell you what I am most proud of. I threw one of our goals. I can't remember the last time that happened if at all. What makes it even better is how it happened. I got the disc, and my teammate immediately started calling for it. But three members of the other team ran toward her, so I pivoted the other way. They all shifted and she stayed were she was, which meant she was open. I tend to panic when I get the disc period, so the fact that I waited and then we connected to score really made me happy.

Thursday Threesome for July 12th

Ack! Is the month almost half over already?

Anyway, here's the Thursday Threesome for today, brought to us by Clint (who watches all the time) and The Back Porch.

Onesome: The-- Food Channel: Yummy Goodness or Food Pr0N? Who do you like to watch (or love to hate )?
As I mentioned, Clint loves it. But I don't find it very entertaining after the first hour or so and haven't watched it enough to have an opinion.

Twosome: Food-- in the Summer? Cooking in the kitchen? Any tips to beat the heat for those in the gang literally baking in the heat?
Eat out of use the microwave. Wait, that's what I do all year long. :)

Threesome: Channel-- some coolness our way: what is your favorite Summertime beverage (yes, mixed drinks work too...).
Proving once again how boring I am, I'll say water.

Here's to Long Weekends

You've got to love getting two extra days off work. See, Master's closed Thursday and Friday, so I actually had five days free. Well, sort of free.

Wednesday, the 4th, I went with Clint to the BBQ that the career group was hosting. That was loads of fun. The weather was roasting hot, but we spent most of the time in the pool. Couldn't have asked for a nicer time.

That night, the two of us went out and found some fireworks to watch, which was nice since I missed them last year.

Thursday, I unfortunately had some errends to run. So I set out early to beat the heat. Got shot (allergy, that is) and bought a present for a wedding while getting my oil changed. Then I went home and vegged for a few hours. Unfortunately, Fox didn't air the last two episodes filmed of Drive, which bummed me out. But I had fun just watching whatever was on TV. That night we had youth group, of course, which went well.

Friday was another veg around the condo day for most of the day. I finished Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (crying through the last 50 pages even though I knew what was coming), so I'm not ready for book 7. I also rewatched Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I still enjoyed it the seond time around.

That night was my ultimate Frisbee game for the week. We had better numbers then I was expecting. I got to play about as much as I wanted to, no more, no less. The other team had extra women, so they often put a woman on me. Not that I'm complaining. Finally, someone at my playing level. And I got a defense in. Just barely, but I will take it. I'm good for about one a season, so I'm not complaining.

Saturday was Nick and Jenny's wedding. It was down in Yorba Linda. I'm surprised their muscles didn't hurt from smiling so much. It's always wonderful to see a couple look so happy.

Unfortunately, I made a dangerous discovery that night. Downtown Disney gives you three hours of free parking. That's more then enough time to check out the Disney pins store and the World of Disney for more pins. I've found another way to feed my addiction. I think I am sunk. After all, I did buy several more pins that night. HELP!

Sunday was just a nice quiet day around the condo. Then it was back to work. How I wish this were a two day work week as well.

I did get in a couple Hitchcock movies over the long weekend as well. Vertigo is long drawn out and boring. Other then that, I loved it. :) North by Northwest was better. Still, I don't find his films terrifying or edge of your seat suspense.

Thursday Threesome for July 5th

Loving the extra time off work. But here's the Thursday Threesome for today, brought to us this week by The Back Porch.

Onesome: At-- the head of the line for the iPhones, were you? No? What do you think of all the hoopla. ...and the continuing hype? Just curious...
Actually, I have yet to get a cell phone, but less an iPhone. I'm sure it's cool, but I don't see the reason for the hype.

Twosome: Long-- roads to forever... Do you have a favorite road/trail/path you like to travel just for the scenery?
Actually, there are a couple roads around town I like to take because they feel like you aren't in the middle of town. And I love taking Highway 12 because it is so beautiful.

Threesome: Last-- year did you think you'd be doing what you ended up doing for the holiday yesterday? ...or did plans change a bit?
I had plans for yesterday last year? About the only thing I remember thinking was I knew I wanted to see fireworks since I missed them. And I did. Other then that, I don't remember having any plans.
