Winter League 2015

As I hinted at last week, I’m playing winter league again this year.  And, I’m even on the same team.  That’s right, KAPOW! is back in action.  This is only the first time I’ve played winter league back to back or on the same team in winter league.  Granted, it’s also only the fourth time I’ve played winter league in the 15 years I’ve been playing ultimate down here.

The games are in a different location this year, and it’s actually closer to home, which is wonderful.  Unfortunately, we have way too many people on the team.  Like 20 guys are showing up each week for 4 spots on the field.  You do the math.  It’s why I’ve only played two points a game so far.

Our record is 1-2.  And I didn’t even play in the game we won; I was too burned out from working 11 hours that day, although I do go to cheer them on.  Our general lack of ultimate strategy and experience outside of pick up is coming into play again, not to mention most of the teams at our level aren’t back this year.

But we are having fun, and I like getting to hang out with everyone one night during the week.  I’ve pretty much written this season off for playing time, but that’s much better than cutting people and hurting feelings.

Busy First Half

Wow, are we down to almost the final week of January?  The month has flown by.

Much of that was working.  Not only did we have our normal month end stuff to do, but it was fiscal year end.  And a member of the team is out on medical leave, so we all had to pick up her slack.  There were plenty of late nights, including the nights of my first two winter league ultimate Frisbee games.  It was crazy, but we made it!

Fortunately, I had weekends to relax.  I’ve only done things one weekend, and that was this last one when I met up with a group of friends in Downtown Disney for brunch.  There was a lot of us: Sue Ann, Heide, Shirley, Angelique, Doug, Chris, and me.  Our group just keeps on growing.  The only issue we have with this meeting is that it is also race weekends at Disneyland (which is why Shirley and Doug are in the area), and the traffic around the park is much worse than normal.  But it is worth it, and we always have a lot of fun.

Plus, after brunch, I went pin shopping.  I don’t think I’d been down there for about 11 months, which is the longest in a while, so I saw lots of new pins I need.  Yes, need.  I bought about half a dozen of them with more purchases planned when I am down there next month to go to the parks.

This weekend?  There’s a national read-a-thon in the afternoon, and I think I’m going to participate in that.  Otherwise, I’m going to sit around and do nothing.  Sounds absolutely wonderful, doesn’t it?

Quiet New Year

You know, I didn’t intend to leave this hanging for the last week and a half.  Yes, that’s how crazy life has been in the last couple of weeks.  But that’s another blog.  For today, we are going to blog about New Years.

Which is so incredibly thrilling and exciting a topic.  Actually, it was kind of nice.  I got off early on Wednesday.  I was thinking about going to a giant ultimate Frisbee game, but it had been super windy the day before, so I didn’t wind up doing that.  Turns out I really missed out.  Anyway, I decided to go to a movie and then head home.  I spent the evening working on taking down my Christmas decorations.

Thursday morning, I got up and went to hang out with my friend Kurt.  I haven’t seen him in ages.  I got to see his new house and hang out with him and his kids for a while.  When we got back to his house, I got to see his wife, Kellie, for a while as well.

Later in the afternoon, I played some ultimate Frisbee in town.  The wind had died down.  It was chilly but fun.

And in between?  I worked hard on taking down the rest of my Christmas decorations.  I must say, when I don’t get as many up as I had planned, it is super easy to take them all down.  I actually finished on New Year’s Day.

What was my motivation to get them all down?  That Monday, I bought a Wii U, telling myself I couldn’t start playing it until I had everything put away.  And I pulled it out and played with it on New Year’s Day.  So far, I’m playing Mario Kart 8 the most, which isn’t too surprising.  Mario Kart is a blast.  Haven’t played with it too much since I’ve been busy at work, but it’s been a lot of fun when I have pulled it out.

Christmas with My Family

I headed up to see my family for Christmas.  Shocking if you know me at all, right?  I didn’t drive up until Christmas Eve this year since I had stuff to be working on at my new job.  I came back on Sunday, so it was definitely a quicker trip than I normally take for Christmas.

But it was so worth it.

I had a great time with my family.  Christmas morning, we went over to my brother’s house to open presents.  Then that night was down to my uncle and aunt’s for dinner with them and my cousin and his family.

One night, my niece spent with Grandma, Grandpa, and Uncle Mark sleeping around the Christmas tree.  Okay, maybe that night wasn’t the best since the adults didn’t get much sleep.

And I got to see some longtime family friends while I was up.

So, while it was short, it was also very busy with lots of visiting.  And then I got to come back and crash right back into work.
