You Have Got to be Kidding Me

There is a bill in Congress to pay reperations to Guam for harm suffered during World War II. Don't believe me? Go look at this link.

Not let me see if I have this straight.

Japan invaded Guam.

The US fought to free Guam.

These events took place 60 years ago.

The US is considering paying Guam for the harm sufforded when they were invaded by Japan. Today.

I wish I were making this up. If it weren't true, it would be funny.

Now, I'm not saying the the people of Guam didn't suffer during World War II. But why should we, the liberator, pay them reperations? We did them no harm. In fact, we helped them. We gave them money and lives so they could be free.

Now I'll acknowledge they probably needed help after the war was over. But that was 60 years ago. Again, why are we paying for something that happened then, now?

This is why we are running the huge deficit we are. These kind of bills need to be laughed out of Congress. We don't have an unlimited check book. And if we keep making and passing these kind of bills, we won't be around as a country much longer.

It seems every year I am getting more and more fed up by the politians in Washington and Sacramento. I truly wish there was a good way to shake up the system.

I've always said I would read them when I knew when book 7 was coming out. I just expected a little more warning. I've got three more to cram in in the next seven weeks along with other books I can't wait to read.

Either way, let me know what you think about Professor Severus Snape when you finish reading Book 6.

I just came back from the Harry Potter convention in New Orleans this past Monday and one of the academic discussions was named "The Seven Trials of Severus Snape" based on the cliff-hanger left by the author in book 6. Quite an animated presentation it was! :-)

Don't know if you're interested but the next HP convention will be in Chicago August 7-11, 2008. I'm sure the Book 7 discussions will be highly popular!
