An Unexpected Day Off

That's what I had today. Not that I've done anything special with it. I've been playing around on the internet and watching the special features on the Mary Poppins DVD. Finally. Did conclude that I am going to take my car to Wal-Mart for new tires tomorrow.

You see, my office flooded over the weekend. After all the rain. :) A pipe burst and flooded everything. My boss called me yesterday and told me not to come in since they'd be cleaning my carpet all day. So I haven't even bothered to get dressed today. Certainly can't complain about that.

I had a busy weekend, as always now. Friday night I spent the night with some friends watching movies at Master's. Finally saw I, Robot and really enjoyed it.

Saturday morning I went over to some friends for breakfast. They've just moved into my complex. And it was lots of fun to chat with them.

Saturday afternoon I started my dance class. It's a beginning ballroom class I'm taking with Stu and Debbie. It was great to be back at it again, even if it was very beginning. I think it'll be a bit slower then when I would want, but about right for them. After all, I've had dance lessons before. I've even preformed. And I can't tell you how much I missed it.

Then we headed to Debbie's for game night. Lost Harry Potter Uno big time. Like super bad.

Sunday was the usual stuff. Church, talking to the fam, worship team practice, and a youth staff meeting. Busy as always.

Which brings up back to today.

I probably should have been looking for job stuff on-line since I have the time. But I've done nothing productive. And it really was just what I needed.

The Weather Outside is Frightful

I know, that's a Christmas song. But it really truly is. Thunder and lightening frighten me. Never experienced that much of it growing up. So today's thunder and lightening storm wasn't one of my favorite parts of today.

Especially since the lightening was stricking around campus. Only building I've heard that's been hit was the Stewardship Services Building, which is a ways away from me and a building not directly connected with the college. But it's still freaky. And the thunder was so loud I kept jumping for about 30 minutes.

We were getting hail and hard rain, too.

Looks like it's cleared up now. Sky looks as blue as when I came into work this morning.

Meanwhile, my garage door doesn't seem to want to close all the way any more, and I'm not sure why. It closes far enough to be securely closed, but why won't it go down as far as it used to? I swear, that door is driving me up a wall. (Not that it takes much these days.)

Went to another placement company yesterday. Again, on the 101, so again, most of their jobs are further away then I'm really interested in. I consider it a bit of false advertising since he talked about jobs in the northern San Fernando valley to me on the phone but in person acts like there are never any jobs to have there. He was also trying to talk me into taking no raise to get another job. Sorry, but the reason I'm looking for a new job is to get a raise. If I want to make what I make now, I'll stay at a job I love, thank you very much. And I'm certainly not going to agree to that without looking for a while first. I've been at this a week. I'm not going to lower my standards yet. And, honestly, I'd be very surprised if I lower my standards that far.

Took Pete out to lunch for his birthday today. Nice to have a chance to hang out with him. We used to do that all the time, but now hardly see each other, even though we just work at different ends of the same building. Meanwhile, today is also my friend Casey's birthday. How old they are. (And the fact that they are both younger then me is completely irrelevant.)

That's not thunder I hear again, is it?

Thursday Threesome for February 24th

Post this quick, then get back to work!

Brought to us this week by Jill Conner Browne and The Back Porch.

Onesome: Sweet Potato-- Sweet potatoes always remind me of thanksgiving which brings me to food...what is your all time favorite holiday food that you wish you'd get a chance to eat at other times?
Pumpkin Pie and Mom's Yams and Apples

Twosome: Queens'-- do you follow what Prince Charles and others are up to? What do you think about the Queen not going to the wedding?
I follow the Brittish royal family as little as possible. Feel the same about them as I do about our politicians. However, it seems funny to me that the Queen won't be at the wedding.

Threesome: Field Guide to Men-- when it comes to the opposite sex, do you feel you have a grasp on 'em - or do they continue to just surprise you?
I don't think women are any harder to understand then men. Both surprise me to no end.

What's that in the sky?

Something's wrong! The sky has gone from blue to grey and there's something bright shining up there. And nothing wet is falling from it. What can it be?

Yep, the storm is finally moving on. After almost a week of cloudy skies and no stop rain, we have sunshine. And I've got to say it feels wonderful. Walked down to the bookstore on campus without my coat on today, even.

We need some sunshine. It's getting scary around here again. Mudslides, flooding (including a major freeway), accidents. As much as I enjoy rain in the winter, I'm quite happy to see the storm passing.

Plus, my garage door took on too much water again, and won't open. Maybe I can park my car there instead of the street tonight!

So what else has been happening in my life?

Saturday was my turn to host the game night again. Went well, although one roommate was cleaning his stuff up just after everyone got there. Still, I didn't have to clean the entire condo myself. Only four of us were there, and we played Hear Me Out. Fun game. Especially since I won both times.

Sunday was church stuff, including a SNYF that night.

Yesterday, I took the afternoon off and met with my first head hunting firm. Seemed nice, but most of their jobs were further away then I wanted. Today, I called back several companies, most of which were temp to hire, and I want direct hire since I already have a job I like. I'm meeting with someone else tomorrow afternoon. He's talking about jobs in the northern San Fernando Valley, which would be second choice on location, so hopefully things work out.

Book blogging. Over the weekend, I finished Sit, Stay, Slay. I wanted to like the book more then I did. The plot was slow, however, with a quick rush to the end and no real clues.

Now I'm working on I Dreamed I Married Perry Mason. This book is about a biographer researching Perry Mason's creator and getting involved in a 50 year old case that the author never got around to investigating. So far, it's intriging, although I'm still not sure how I feel about the characters. Still, I have a hard time putting it down each night, even when I'm dead tired.

Coming Out of the Closet

Ok, I have a confession to make. I'm looking for a new job.

Don't get me wrong, I love Master's. But I've been here a long time. Probably too long. I'm doing the same job as when I started. And the pay is horrid. So it's time to look around and try to improve my career.

Of course, this should come as no surprise to anyone reading my blog for the last couple months. I'm sick of the roommate shuffle and especially burned out with that right now.

You know that opportunity I was talking about about 5 weeks ago? I interviewed at Princess Cruises. Didn't go anywhere.

Monday night, on a whim, I put my resume on Monster. I've been getting e-mails and phone calls since then. All from head hunter companies. I've got an appointment with one of them tomorrow.

Seeing as this is the worst kept secret around Santa Clarita, I just told my boss. Seemed to take it ok. I'm not worried that he'll react badly. But I wanted him to hear it from me and not someone else. Like an potential employer. Or a friend walking in here and telling everyone accidentally.

This will mean major changes. Like less internet time. And no more caf meals. But I think it's time I grew up a little.

With a Twist

Are you ready for the ultimate twist in this little tale that's been developing? I'm still not sure how I feel about it.

When I got back from dropping the current convention off after sci-fi night Wednesday, my three roommates and the friend were in the living room. I was asked to go to my room for a few minutes while they finished a proposal. When I did come out, they started by apologizing for the way they've been stringing me along. Then they hit me with their plan.

When my roommates moved out, there were going to be six of them in a house. But two of those have had to back out, including one of the guys who is currently living with me. In fact, he's moving in with his uncle and aunt ASAP. Naturally, this makes things more expensive then they had hoped and changes their plans around completely.

So, their idea was to have the one roommate move out and the friend move in and take his place. When the final friend moves out here June 1st, they will move out.

For the most part, I'm happy about this. It gives me a little bit longer to figure out what I'm doing next. Like three and a half months. Of course, I was starting the countdown until they moved out. But I can do this. And the added time will help tremendously in the long run.

This is the kind of twist I would love in a movie or book, but I'm still trying to adjust to in real life. How do those fictional characters do it?

Of course, I figured this was a good time to remind all of them about me hosting the game night tomorrow. They all seemed willing to help pick/clean before hand, and seemed to think my requests were more then fair. Let's see if they follow through or not.

In other news, the next storm has moved in. It started raining yesterday afternoon and is pouring out there today. And it's supposed to keep it up for at least a week. It's already getting bad out there. Looks like Southern CA will be in the news yet again.

I'm really tired today. Probably has something to do with not getting home last night until 11:30. We took the youth bowling last night after youth group. Nice for them since they don't have school tomorrow. Bad for me because I've wanted to take a nap all afternoon. We bowled two games, and I did great the first game. 184, which I believe is a personal best. The second game, however, I only get a 115. And I was thrilled to break 100 after the way I started out. Still, it was fun. I haven't been bowling in ages.

Tonight, I'm supposed to go to a friend's 30th birthday party. Except I'm so tired all I want to do is go home and sleep. And watch TV. Heck, I haven't watched Lost and Alias from Wednesday yet. Still, I'll probably pop in for an hour or so.

Right now, I need to get to dinner. (How many posts do I end with that line?)

Thursday Threesome for February 17th

If I hurry, I can get this done before 5! Brought to us this week by God and The Back Porch.

Onesome: Mountains-- What is the elevation where you live? Do you like it there or would you prefer something a little different?
Making me work for it this week. :) Elevation is 1220 feet. I like it. This is the elevation I've pretty much always lived at. Keeps it from getting too cold in the winter.

Twosome: Valleys-- When you travel, do you have any particular valley or area you like to pass through on the way from here to there? ...and is there any route you'll take just for the scenery even if it's just a tad longer or more out of the way?
I like taking Sierra Hwy around here because it's pretty. In a desert sort of way. Of course, the 14 is pretty much the same stuff, so I take one coming to work and the other going home. That's the way it's faster. And heading to my parents, I love the drive through the 12. Of course, it's usually dark one direction, but it's still nice.

Threesome: and Streams-- Do you have a stream you like to walk along and just think and enjoy the view? How about a metaphorical one if you don't have a real one close by?
I'd like to have a stream like that, but I don't. I find the ocean is great for that, however.

Phew. Four minutes to spare!

Banging My Head Against a Wall Has to be Less Painful

Seriously, if I promise to bang my head against the wall an hour a day, can I skip the next couple of weeks?

Let's start with Monday night. I'm at dinner. Eating alone. I hear a voice call from behind me. It's a female co-worker. Married with grandchildren. Known her for years. "Mark, where's your Valentine." Said in a very teasing voice. Excuse me? Maybe, just maybe, you should know better by the time your 60 then to tease people like that? I'm not one of those super sensative people who is offended by couples. And I know Valentine's Day is about couples. That's fine. But to tease someone who is single on Valentine's Day is beyond poor taste.

My response was the turn back to my table. I couldn't figure out what to say that I wouldn't regret later.

Now the fun turns back to my roommate soap opera.

Last night, roommate 1 was watching Veronica Mars with me when roommate 2 came home. (BTW, Matt, this is the next show I hook you on. After 24.) When the show ended, 1 asked 2 about the place 1's friend was to be staying. Turns out it won't work after all. So 1 goes to call him and then tries to find a Super 8 Motel near by.

Guessed who turned up at the front door as I was frantically trying to leave for work this morning. 1's friend. Who only introduced himself after I demanded his name. And he'd already ask "Which one are you?" Common curisy anyone?

Can this situation turn out in any way to make me look any more petty and worse?

I can tell I'm tired and frustrated. I'm ready to snap at just about everyone. Over anything. There had better not be any major crises anywhere for the next few days, or I may blow at someone who really doesn't deserve it.

Meanwhile, it's two weeks until 1 moves out for sure. Not that I'm counting the days or anything. I have a feeling it will be a very long two weeks. And it'll be interesting to see what happens when I remind them that this weekend is my turn to host the game night again.

Weekend in Review

The most exciting thing that happened this weekend? I spent most of it watching The Greatest American Hero. There was a mix-up on release dates, and I got mine earlier then I should have. Still a cool show. And that theme song.... Although Benjamin probably wishes I hadn't gotten it. He's seen far more of it then he would wish, I'm sure. At least he should be gone before season 2 comes out.

I also did my taxes over the weekend. I'm getting refund from both state and fed! I wasn't quite sure how things would work out since I was claiming rental income for the first time as well as the interest deductions. But, as I figured, one canceled out the other and it turned out to be about the same. I filed on line and I should have my refund in my savings account by the end of the month.

Game night was at Konrad and Carol's. We played Scattergories. That games fun, too, and it's been a long time since I played it.

Roommate update. I told the one that I didn't want "The Destroyer" staying at our place. Apparently, he's on his way into town, but will stay with some friends of a different roommate. If I cared what my roommates thought of me (they obviously think I'm dirt as is), I'd be curious to know what they think of me. Meanwhile, they were about to sign on a place, but then someone backed out, so they'll need to look and apply to different places. I'm trying hard not to gloat because it's not mature, but I could have told them they'd have this kind of trouble. I'm almost expecting an announcement that only one of them is leaving after all, but we'll see. I just don't see how two of them will be able to afford what they're going to be paying once the dust settles. Then again, it's not my problem and I shouldn't be worrying about it. I just can't help it because I like being right. Rather immature of me, isn't it?

Thoughts on a Saturday

Just trying to prove you never can tell when I'll show up around here.

Also, wanted to talk about the book I finished.

For the last couple weeks, I've been reading Hurt: Inside the World of Today's Teenagers. My roommate was given the book a couple months ago, and I thought it would be interesting reading given my work with youth at church.

The book focuses most on high schoolers. The basic premise is that adults have systematically abandonded youth, and that leads to pain and the behavior we see around us today. Most of the book is trying to prove this premise by talking about how that plays out in various aspects of teen's lives. There were chapters that were obvious, like family. But some of the chapters seemed to go too far. The chapter on morals doesn't place any of the blame on youth. This to me makes it feel too much like the rest of the world today. Sorry, but we are responsible for our own actions. Especially interested is that he doesn't even address the need for moral training. It's more cut and dry, but almost too far in defending bad behavior, even when saying it's bad. Does that make any sense?

The last couple chapters are proposed solutions. They are far too short and unreasonable. Make sure every teen has 3 or 4 adults who care about him/her? Right. In a town of almost 200,000, that's really going to happen. And everyone involved in young people's lives meeting regularly to make sure that happesn. Again, right....

Having said that, the book had lots of food for thought. And I'm going to loan it to the youth pastor at church tomorrow. I'll be interested to get his take on it since I still don't know where I stand on it myself.

And the Rain, Rain, Rain Came Down, Down, Down

Yep, it's another really rainy Friday here in Sunny Southern CA. And I guess this proves that they don't close campus at the drop of a hat, because I've worked all day and it's been pretty rainy all day.

I've been listening to Disney songs I downloaded into my iTunes for the last hour or so. Of course, that makes me miss Jeff all the more. That summer we were first roommates was so much fun listening to Disney while playing Monopoly or The Stock Market Game. I miss those times.

In other news, I get to be the meany at home again. One of my roommates asked if his friend who's moving out here (which is what prompted them all moving out here) could come out two weeks early and stay with us. He was willing to pay rent, which was a big enticement. But I just can't handle 5 of us in there right now. Four is pushing it some days. Top that with this guy's nickname (The Destroyer), and you see my hesitation. I feel badly, but I need to protect myself. After all, as soon as he pays me rent, he doesn't have to move out without a court order, which begins to get messy.

Have I mentioned recently that I want to live by myself? If only I could figure out a way to afford to do that.

Meanwhile, my roommates have applications filed out and sitting in the condo not turned in. I honestly wonder if they're really going to move out or not. At least all three of them. I think there's more trouble in the moving out paradise then I realize. Once again, I have no clue what's going on in my own place. What was I thinking when I bought this place?

In other subjects, I ran twice this week. Tuesday wasn't the impressive, but Thursday was most of a mile and a half. And I worked out with weights in the fitness center here on campus Monday and Wednesday. If I hadn't called my mom for advice on this roommate thing, I would have made three times this week. Let's see if I can keep it up next week.

And I finished my book. I'll try to make a post on it soon.

Thursday Threesome for February 10th

This week's edition is brought to us by Benjamin Franklin (one of my favorite quotes), and The Back Porch.

Onesome: Nothing is certain- Have you ever thought you had "Sure Thing?" Did it pay off or not?
Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I'm usually certain I have a sure thing about everything.

Twosome: But death- Do you belive in life after death?
I most certainly believe in Heaven and Hell.

Threesome: and taxes- Have you got all your tax documents squared away and ready to work on? Or are you one of the people at the post office on April 15th?
Everything I've gotten is sitting on my chest of drawers in my closet. And I'm thinking this is probably the best weekend for me to work on them, too. For one thing, it would let me work on them in February, which I saw I will every year but never do. Also, the next few weeks will be busy, busy, busy.

In Which I Am Sorry I Insisted Jeff Come Back

You may or may not remember, but when Jeff moved out in May, he left behind some stuff that wouldn't fit in his parent's trunk, including the chair we had out on the balcony. I looked around this summer, and they don't make that chair that size anywhere. In fact, I was treated as stupid for saying they ever had.

About a month ago, I called Jeff and told him it was well past time for him to come get the rest of his junk. After all, he'd said he'd be back in June to get it. He agreed. Well, Monday night was the night he came, and he surprised me by showing up with a truck. Seems that while he was happy to leave me the chair, his wife wasn't. So they flew to northern CA, borrowed a truck, and drove down here to pick up the stuff, including that chair. Not sure how it's getting back to Idaho, but it's no longer at the condo. And I'm rather sad about that. It was nice having a chair out on the balcony. I had fun sitting out there and reading when the weather was nice. And it created another room people could use, which in a place that small is a definite plus. Not sure what I'm going to do out there now. We'll just have to wait and see.

In spite of all that, I am glad to have the rest of the stuff out of my place. It was beyond time he got the rest of it. And he kept saying "That's where this has been," so I'm sure he's glad, too. And I was glad to see him again. Nice to catch up. I miss my friend Jeff. Still don't miss my messy roommate Jeff, however.

TV Tuesday for February 8th

This week, we're discussing the Super Bowl. Ask me if I'm surprised. Nope, not in the least. :)

1. How much of this year's Super Bowl did you watch? Do you watch any of the pre-game hype?
I watched almost all of it, but it was more background. I was talking to my family for a while, then was doing stuff on my computer. So, unlike last year where I really watched it, this year I only partically watched it. And I stopped watching with about a minute to go to start watching the Happy Days reunion from Thursday.

2. What was your favorite commercial during the Super Bowl? Least favorite?
My favorite would have to be the Bud Light or which ever beer company it was where the pilot of the plane jumped out after the beer. I also liked the one, or what I followed of it, with the cat and the spaghetti sauce. And the career builder/ape ads were pretty good as well. Least favorite was the one of the web site (godaddy?) that only aired once instead of twice. Forget last year, it was just sick and wrong.

3. Did you like the half-time show?
I have yet to find a half-time show I loved, but this one seemed fine to me. Of course, I was hardly paying attention.

4. What's your favorite food to eat while watching the Super Bowl?
Chips or other snack type food. Which I didn't do this year.

~ BONUS ~ A lot has been made over the years about the post-Super Bowl slot to highlight or launch TV shows. It was the post-Super Bowl spot that brought us the A-Team and the Wonder Years. Do you stay up to watch the post-Super Bowl shows? What is the most memorable post-Super Bowl show you've seen?
I think I've only seen two. Alias from two years ago and Survivor All-Stars from last year. Take that back. Survivor Australia started after the Super Bowl, too, didn't it? Anyway, Alias would be my choice because it changed so much of the show. No necessarily for the better, either.

Where Did the Weekend Go?

Is it Monday already? More importantly, is it the end of the day Monday already? Time is just flying by.

Of course, the fact that I spent so much of my weekend watching TV probably didn't help. Which brings me to a major decision. I am giving up on Joey. I just don't find it funny. And I'm going to save CSI and Without a Trace until summer reruns. I just don't have the time right now to watch everything I'd like to watch. Of course, we'll see. I may change my mind once my roommates have moved out and I find out what my new roommates viewing habits are. But cutting out two and a half hours of TV has got to do something to help out my schedule.

Of course, it wasn't all watching TV this weekend. I also watched Phantom of the Opera with the game night crew. I thought it was really well done, but I don't have any of the music and have only seen the play once. Debbie wasn't happy with some of the changes they made. Of course, I'm the one who pointed out a major change that she missed....

After that we went out to Baja Fresh for dinner then played killer Uno with the Muppet cards. Best part of that? I won!!!! Seriously, it was loads of fun.

Sunday I helped Stu move for an hour or so. Basically, the big things that were left. And he's moving in with an old friend of mine I hadn't seen for a long time. Nice to see him every so briefly. I had the Super Bowl, but in the background while doing other things. And finished off with a few more hours of TV and 3 chapters in my book. Non-fiction sure takes longer to read then fiction. Especially when I'm not having time to read.

Time for an Update

Where does the time go? It's Friday already! Of course, it also feels like a long week.

Let's see, what to report.

I have one roommate who has promised to leave March 1st, the other two will give me 30 days notice minimum after they find a place. So I might have them as long as April.

Tuesday night, I went over to some friends for dinner. Didn't know them super well, and it was a great evening. They just got married a couple months ago, and I was their first dinner guest. I feel so honored. And we played Scrabble. I stunk, but it was fun. I'm really rotten at that game.

And of course, there's the notice that Enterprise will be ending after this season. About time! The show is slow and boring. I would have given up on it long ago if not for the convention coming over to watch it. And it'll mean another free night next year, too.

Having said that, I really enjoyed last week's episode and can't wait to see what happens next on the episode that airs tonight.

And I wasn't getting sick last week. I was just over tired. And maybe over stressed? Either way, I was feeling that way this afternoon, but I'm better tonight. I think I need to cut something out of my life. I hear work volunteering.... :)

The rest of my life is still in a holding pattern until I figure out what happens next. I'll let you know as soon as I do.

Thursday Threesome for February 3rd

Yep. I'm still here. Which makes doing today's Thursday Threesome a little easier. For the record, it's brought to us by e-zines and the people at The Back Porch (who are advertising for their e-zine today.)

Onesome: All-- all the world's a stage... So what types of issues put you on your soapbox?
Liberals being hypocritical. And them being jerks anymore. Ask my "real life" friends. I seem to be going off on a regular basis these days. I really should do a rant about that around here, shouldn't I?

Twosome: Things-- what sort of things are you most likely to purchase "spur of the moment" when shopping?
Something on sale. Paperback books.

Threesome: Girl-- sugar and spice and everything nice? Come now, what are YOU really made of?
Molecules.
